Why RV Baggage Doors Warp and Delaminate... and How to Spec Ones That Don't

The core construction and sealing decisions that separate a 10-year baggage door from a 2-year callback.

Few exterior components generate as many complaints as baggage and compartment doors. Owners report doors bowing 3/4 inch from the center, popping open on the road, cracking at the corners, and the outer skin separating from the core. For a builder or dealer, every one of those is a callback. The good news: the failure modes are predictable, which means they are specifiable. Choose the right construction up front and the problem largely disappears.


What Failure Actually Looks Like

Two distinct problems get lumped together. Warping (or bowing) is the door deforming out of plane — the center pushing outward while the edges stay put, which breaks the seal and can let the door spring its latch. Delamination is the outer skin separating from the inner core, usually showing up as bubbling, soft spots, or a skin that flexes independently of the door. They can occur separately, but moisture often drives both.


Root Causes

  • Water intrusion. Once moisture reaches a wood or luan core, it swells, freezes, and separates the laminate — the classic delamination path.
  • Thermal cycling. Dark skins on a sunny compartment door see big temperature swings; a core and skin that expand at different rates will bow over time.
  • Under-built cores. A thin or unsupported core with no internal framing has nothing to resist the bow.
  • Seal and latch design. A single center latch on a wide door lets the corners lift; the corners are where water and warping start.


Core Construction Is the Whole Ballgame

The difference between a door that stays flat and one that bows is almost entirely in the core. Look for a laminated core with internal metal framing — a perimeter channel (commonly a C- or Z-channel) that the skin bonds to and that resists deformation. A roughly 3/4-inch laminated core with channel reinforcement and a moisture-stable skin such as polypropylene or fiberglass behaves very differently from a glued sandwich of skin and luan. The framing carries the load; the skin just rides on it.


Sealing and Latching for Flatness

On wider doors, latch placement matters as much as the seal itself. Multi-point or corner-biased latching keeps the perimeter compressed against the bulb seal so the corners can't lift. Specify the seal to the compartment's exposure, and make sure the door's flange and seal geometry actually match the opening — a door clamped flat by good hardware simply doesn't warp the way an under-latched one does.


Sizing Custom Compartment Doors

Standard sizes rarely fit custom and small-batch builds, which is exactly why so many end up with marginal aftermarket doors. Custom compartment doors can be built across a wide range — roughly 12 to 60 inches wide and 10 to 50 inches tall — with either square or radius corners to match the cutout. Building the door to the opening, with the right core, is cheaper over the life of the unit than replacing warped doors under warranty.


Builder's Spec Checklist

  1. Laminated core with internal C- or Z-channel framing.
  2. Moisture-stable skin (polypropylene or fiberglass), not bare luan.
  3. Sealed edges and corners to keep water out of the core.
  4. Latch strategy matched to door width (multi-point on wide doors).
  5. Corner style (square vs. radius) matched to the existing cutout.
  6. Built to the true opening size, not the nearest stock size.
